Routes
I prefer to run off-road. To me, a run should be like a hike in the country, only speeded up. I'm lucky that both home in Oxfordshire and work in Enfield offer a good choice of cross-country routes.
Weekends
We live a mile south of the Thames, on the upper part of the river between Oxford and Lechlade. The Thames National Path makes for great running. It's pretty, it's peaceful and it's flat. Although there's a substantial hill from home down to it ... and back up again. I can do all my long runs on it - Lechlade to home is 13 miles, and Oxford to home is almost 20. But I shall have to do some of my long training runs on road, to get me better used to pounding over the harder surface.

Weekdays
Enfield is right on the edge of London, just inside the M25. Our nearest railway station is Enfield Chase, which reminds us that this was once royal hunting country. And there is indeed pleasant countryside within a mile of the office. My usual 6-mile route takes me through beech woods and along the path of the New River - a canal built in 1609 to supply London with drinking water from springs in Herfordshire.
